|
"Dicks' brawl: West Ham defender Julian Dicks' 2000 testimonial match against Athletic Bilbao descended into a 17-man brawl after some rash challenges"
BBC website highlighting some notable testimonials in an article about their relevance today etc - did anyone go to the Dicksie game and what do you remember of it?

Paolo was 'asked' to leave the pitch or he'd be sent off
I think winterburn made the first tackle before the brawl. There were others shortly after that kicked it off proper.
I was very drunk. Had the best seats ive had at UP ever that day. Back row of chicken run half way line..

remember it being quite expensive for a testimonial so not a sell-out

I was there with my kids, sat in back of the Bobby for the first and only time. Attendance was poor about 14,000 and it was a quite tasty match at times. Think we lost too.........

I was there.
Remember Julian moaning about it afterwards - he paid a large fee for Athletic Bilbao to turn up, even though they were already in the country. In return they presented him with a testimonial gift of... an ashtray.
My main memory of it apart from Paolo getting wound up was sadness of realising how much Julian had deteriorated when he came on for his cameo. He was my favourite player from my youth bar none.

Great article, but can't read it and ignore this line:
"Manager Harry Redknapp pulled Dicks off after just 25 second-half minutes"

I was there, I remember being disappointed with the turn out for a great player. Still got the programme.

If it was the match where Nigel Winterburn sent one of theirs into the advertising boards, then yes, I was there.

Wasn't it about £25 a pop or something? I remember people saying that it should have been a tenner a ticket and they would have sold out.
